Taxonomic names in labels

Today I did the first major update in the labeling system of this bloG since the start.

I have been thinking how to implement the taxonomic Latin names of animals in the labels for a long time, but couldn't find any elegant solution. I wanted to somehow have them both appear under the posts together, but stay in separate indexes for easier searching. Today I gave up and added them in brackets after the common names. The label list got messier, but should work better with search engines and visitors can still browse it or search using 'find in page' function in the browser...

Photographic memory: young Grey Shrike-thrush

Pretty cute. And the only sighting I've had of it so far.

Photographic memory: Pardalotes

I think some of these must be the Cuckoo's 'parents'

Photographic memory: Tiny Elephant

I know it's not very original or funny, but on the first image the caterpillar looks much like an elephant's trunk.

Photographic memory: Shining Bronze-Cuckoo [or more likely Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo]

I had only a brief encounter with these cute (apart from the fact that they are parasites) Cuckoos around Christmas 2008. They are young birds and I think they are both Shining Bronze-Cuckoos, but am not 100% sure. The first one was photographed very near a Pardalote family house. The second one was extremely elusive, hiding behind branches all the time. The image quality of the photos is below the average for this bloG, but as I don't think I will get better images of this species soon I decided to post them anyway.

edit: 6 Oct 2009 I received an email from a visitor with a suggestion that the birds are more likely to be Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoos. I had some hesitation identifying them as the photos don't look quite the same as the illustrations in my field guide. Thank you, Amelia!

Funny Black-faced Cormorant

And another of these old photos. A young Black-faced Cormo pulling funny faces to the camera.

Left NBN

I removed Nature Blog Network's logo/button yesterday and deleted my blog address from their registry. Why? I didn't like the way they responded to my request to assist me in giving some more publicity for the 'Stop Australia's Wildlife Slaughter' petition and the whole problem.

They seem too focused on blog carnivals and self-promotion, and avoiding anything potentially serious or disturbing.
